...Pinnacle's Liquid systems are a whole new and unified range of systems all dedicated to TV editing. A lot of research has gone into developing this interface and hardware. If you're a PC guy, and have been waiting with bated breath for a sensible edit system on a PC, then maybe its time to breathe now. You can do offlines with Pinnacle Edition Pro quite easily and then upgrade on a full-blown Liquid chrome. And a set on one Liquid chrome and even a handful of Liquid Editions, may end up being close to any other NLE makers single system in price. And think of what it can do for your productivity with so many systems.

Liquid Edition has a truly dazzling array of special effects, from simple wipes to the sort of multi-screen effects they use on Sky Sports — and they're viewable instantly; no need to wait for the computer to render them.

Liquid Edition holds its own in a rather frenzied non-linear editing market. The addition of machine control, network editing and the stunning DVD authoring capabilities from within the timeline make it a real contender.

...This new feature makes it much easier to accomplish certain effects with features that used to only be available on $300K compositing systems.
...Beyond that, the interoperability between all of Pinnacle's editing systems and its formidable broadcast servers, media management tools and workgroup products is going to offer a major advantage to large production companies and broadcasters.
...I like what I see so far, and look forward to Pinnacle's next trick.

While I acknowledge that FCP and Xpress DV are the leaders in the high end of DV-based nonlinear editors, neither may be the best product for your specific needs. At my Government Video Technology Expo DV "shootout," one attendee came to decide between these two products, but left the shootout intending to purchase a Pinnacle Systems Liquid product.

Pinnacle Systems sells a Compaq platform for its Liquid Blue. One important part of choosing an NLE system is making sure that your platform choice does not negate the software manufacturer's support.

Pinnacle Systems has a video card for every need, from the home camcorder owner to the all-format broadcast editor. For PC-based professional editing systems, the company distributes its own hardware/software packages, separated into Liquid Silver, Liquid Purple and Liquid Blue, each designed for slightly different video applications.

Pinnacle also offers turnkey NLEs - Liquid silver (uncompressed and compressed) and Liquid blue (multiformat). These come configured on HP/Compaq W8000 (Windows 2000) workstations at a cost of $20,000 and $35,000 respectively, with about 280GB of media storage. A hallmark of Liquid NLEs is background rendering, since effects are software based.

EDITING — This is where it all comes together for Pinnacle. And all other subject headings aside, this is where it really counts. Opening a project for the first time in Liquid, it felt like a massive collection of all my favorite features from each of the systems I’ve used in the last 10 years. I felt at home, but it wasn’t my home — it was my home on steroids. Its media management and sifting was similar to or better than Avid’s, its audio mixer was akin to that of the Media 100s, its timeline was a notch or two above Discreet Edit’s, its ease of operation and learning curve was right there with Adobe Premiere’s. In short, I had met my editing soul mate.

Every tool I needed was there. In fact, I was very surprised at the speed at which I was able to master the editing interface. Within a couple of hours, I was comfortable enough with Pinnacle Liquid blue to use it in front of a client. Within a couple of days, I was as fast on Pinnacle Liquid blue as I am on my other NLEs.
